How are Wood Products manufactured?

The FP&M Sector consists of 13 sub-sectors:

The wood products sub-sector provides for 9 industries, which all process timber in one form or another. These organisations are distributed mostly in Gauteng, KZN and the Western Cape. The following is a list of industries under this sector that manufacture wood products:

  • Saw milling and preserving of timber
  • Saw doctoring
  • Wet milling
  • Lumber drying
  • Lumber grading
  • Dry milling
  • Finger jointing and laminating
  • Mill maintenance
  • Charcoal
  • Wattle extract manufacturing
  • Manufacture of veneer sheets; manufacture of plywood, lamin board, particle board and other panels and boards
  • Fibreboard and chipboard products
  • Manufacture of builders’ carpentry and joinery
  • Truss manufacturing
  • Match manufacturing
  • Pallets and bulk bins
  • Other articles of wood, cork, straw and plaiting materials, including

Wood products are hence diverse in their very nature. These products are used in a number of industries, including the home industry. Wood is also used as a source of energy, i.e. wood pellets are one form of a wood product used to generate fuel. Due to the diverse nature of the manufacturing of wood products this guide will provide an example of the match making process.
